We often hear, “Do I really need to wear a retainer after wearing braces?” from many of our patients. Our answer? Yes! You really do!
Braces are expensive and time-consuming, and when treatment is over you want to maintain the alignment of your now straight teeth. A retainer helps the retention of your newly repositioned teeth. Retainers are designed to reduce the risk of orthodontic relapse which may require additional orthodontic treatment. Wearing your retainer can maintain your beautiful smile! It is important for adult and children patients to wear their retainer the recommend time after the removal of their braces.
Greeley, CO orthodontist Dr. David Richter will offer personalized instructions for how long you will need to wear your retainer after removing your braces. Most patients are required to wear a retainer for at least six months after treatment. Retainers can help to protect the investment you made in straightening your crooked teeth.
Maintain Your Retainer
Cleaning your retainer is easy, but the importance of a clean retainer is often overlooked. Dr. Richter reccomeneds brushing removable retainers at least twice a day when you brush your teeth. Cleaning your retainer is essential for controlling the growth of dangerous bacteria and to avoid a stinky retainer that can lead to embarrassing bad breath. When you are not wearing your retainer be sure to keep it stored in its special container, and soak it in antibacterial rinse while you are sleeping.
We suggest that patients bring their retainer to their routine checkups so we can examine it for damage or make adjustments as needed. Our staff will make sure that it fits well for optimal results and isn’t causing you any unnecessary discomfort.
